Motorbike Training Launched at the BDA

Just 18 months after the Bantry Driving Academy opened its gates to car drivers, the BDA is offering people the chance to complete their IBT motorbike training at the Academy’s state-of-the-art training facilities.

IBT or ‘Initial Basic Training’ helps learners to master all of the theory and practical skills they’ll need to become safe motorcyclists.

Here at the BDA, you’ll get to put your motorbike skills to the test straight away when you set out on the BDA’s fully-equipped practice track.

Motorbike Training on a Practice Track

The practice track at the Bantry Driving Academy is the perfect environment for learning to cope with all of the challenges you’ll face after you’ve passed your test.

When you learn to ride a motorbike at our training facilities here, you’ll be able to practise tackling right-hand turns, hill starts, and filter lanes, all on our kilometre of roadway without having to deal with the stress of managing traffic at the same time.

You’ll be able to build your confidence and learn key skills without distraction. Then — as your training progresses — you’ll get to continue your lessons on the public roads, with the full support of our highly-qualified instructors.

Your lessons will be offered via a 2-day intensive training programme, and bike and equipment hire can be arranged through the BDA, so whether you’re returning to motorcycling, or you’re just starting out, you’ll be able to take advantage of the fantastic tuition on offer.

A Natural Step for the Bantry Driving Academy

‘It’s the natural next step for us,’ explains the BDA’s director Mary Keohane. ‘We already offer cycle training with Bikeability-trained instructors, because we’re determined to make sure that everyone on the road is well-trained. Now that we offer motorcycle training too, we’ll be doing even more to make sure the roads are safer for everyone who uses them.’

New Rules for Motorcyclists

The rules around motorcycle training are changing in January 2013, as the Road Safety Authority rolls out its campaign to introduce more rigorous training for all road users.

The training on offer at the Bantry Driving Academy will comply fully with the RSA’s new regulations, which will increase the number of stages learners must go through before they’re allowed to drive the more powerful bikes.

‘The changes bring motorcycle training in line with the graduated training approach that is already working so well for car drivers’ explains Mary. ‘The new training regime, combined with the excellent tuition and facilities we’re able to offer here, will go a long way to improving road safety in Ireland. We’re delighted to be working to promote that cause.’

Remember that, to get started on your lessons, you’ll have to have completed the appropriate basic theory test first, and to have gained a Class A theory test certificate. To revise for the theory test, you should use The Official Driver Theory Test Questions and Answers– Fifth Edition Book
. You’ll then need to book an appointment for a theory test. Once you’ve passed this test, you’ll be ready to start learning here at the BDA!
