Too Young to Learn to Drive?

[singlepic id=23 w=320 h=240 float=right]One of the most popular posts on our website is the one which encourages older people to learn to drive. Our oldest trainee here at the BDA was 73 and she passed her test with flying colours!

But people often assume that people can’t take driving lessons here before they’re 17. In fact, we put drivers as young as 10 in the driving seat at our Summer Camps, and we offer lessons to anyone aged 14 years or over.

They’re all fully insured to drive here on our kilometre of purpose-built practice track.

If your feet can reach the pedals, you can learn driving skills at the BDA.

Too much, too soon?

The fact is that you can never have too much driver training. No-one ever drove by themselves for the first time on a public road and moaned about being over-prepared. There’s no rule that says that the statutory 12 lessons shouldn’t be exceeded.

Across Europe more pre-test hours are required by law. Learners in France complete 20 pre-test training hours. In Finland, it’s 15 hours, and learners have to do 20 theory lessons too.

Our trainees will all have to complete Ireland’s statutory 12 lessons when they want to prepare for their driving tests, so everything they learn before that is an added bonus.

The fact is that, the younger our learners are, the more quickly they absorb the crucial lessons they need to learn about being safe drivers and passengers.

And while they’re having fun in the Simulation Zone, or working together in the Maintenance Centre, our young trainees are learning that they need to look after each other on the roads: that’s a lesson they can’t be taught enough times.

These are just some of the reasons we start teaching people at a much younger age than your average driving school.
It’s never too late to learn to drive, and it’s never too early to learn to be safe.
